“We didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun” — Winnie the Pooh
Now, let’s make some memories!
I know documenting this chapter in your family’s lives is important to you and it’s a privilege for me to be part of this experience with you. I am here to help you every step of the way and make this as simple as possible for you.
MY INTENTION IS MAKING YOU “COMFORTABLE”
If for any reason any part of this process makes you feel stressed please don’t be! Know that making you and your family feel comfortable is so important to me. I am very patient, calm and low pressure! In fact, even I still get butterflies when meeting clients for the first time, which is why I especially love working with those that wish to be documented as their family grows. Over time we all become more like friends than strangers.
Here’s to years of family photos bringing comfort and warmth into your homes, hearts and lives.
1. Where Do I Begin?
We’ll start with a simple chat over the phone so that I can get a better picture of your family and your needs. Every family is little different. Whether you already have something in mind OR have no idea where to start we will talk about everything.
- What to wear…this might mean (virtually) shopping in your closet, getting a few missing pieces or a whole new wardrobe….we’ll find the right balance!
- When and where to have the session…some seasons are better than others, time of day matters too and so does the location…I’ll explain everything!
- What to do with your images… Far too often I hear ”printing is on my list to do” so none of my clients walk away without something printed whether it’s portraits for your wall, a photo album, or even if it’s as simple as prints for your memory box…we’ll figure out what works best for you.
2. What will the Photo Session be like?
We’ll get together for about 40 minutes or so and I’ll guide your family with gentle prompts, games and activities – such as reading a story or walking down a path – to get everyone feeling at ease and comfortable. No one automatically knows what to do, so I will coach you. These prompts are where the magic happens and how we capture your family’s connection as well as your children’s little quirks that you love. Your main job is not to stress about anything – every parent is always surprised at what we manage to capture even when it seems like things aren’t going perfectly.
3. What Do I Do with my Images?
After your session, I’ll give your images a little retouching TLC over the next week or so. You can choose to view the images and select products from comfort of your home or I can come to you and go through everything together. Everyone gets the option of complimentary design services. When I realized that most families do not end up doing much with their images because of overwhelm or simply not having time, I wanted to provide a convenient way where you can touch and feel samples, see the exact quality, colors and sizes and how they look in your home. This is priceless for most families as it saves them time, back and forth, giving up because of frustration with how to be creative and it takes away the uncertainty of what they will end up with when doing this on their own. It truly lights up my heart to put everything together for you, take out the guesswork and minimize the number of decisions you have to make. This is what I live for!
What Do We Wear?
Does what you wear really matter? Yes! But it doesn’t have to be super complicated. I’ll walk you through this in more detail when we work together, but here are 4 tips to get you started…
- Mom, start with your outfit and build everyone’s outfit around yours.
- Stick to a simple color palette like one color and a neutral (ie Blue and White) or even two neutrals (ie Grey and White).
- Opt for mostly solid colors or textures for everyone. Then have just 1 or 2 people in a very simple pattern such as plaid, stripes, delicate floral, or polka dots.
- Use the color palette from your home as inspiration and infuse it into your outfit color scheme.
There’s no better way to visualize this then with actual examples, so visit my Pinterest page for some inspiration and ideas:
What Is the Best…
- Time of Year?
Spring and Fall are the best seasons for outdoor photos with mild and comfortable temperatures and nature in full bloom.
I highly recommend simple and serene landscapes with bodies of water or locations that break up all the heavy greenery in traditional parks. My 3 favorite locations are:
- Manasquan Reservoir (Howell)
- Mercer County Park (West Windsor)
- Princeton University (Princeton)
- Time of Day?
The most flattering light is the hour before sunset when the sun is low in the sky — known as the “golden hour”. The golden hour changes throughout the year so I’ll advise you depending on your date but here’s a loose timeline of when to schedule your session to get you started:
- Apr, May, Jun – 6 pm
- Sept, Oct – 5:30 pm
- Nov, Dec – 4 pm
How Do We Look Natural and Capture our Families Love and Connection?
I have various tricks up my sleeve to get your family and children feeling more comfortable and at ease. No one comes to their session knowing what to do. It’s my job to coach you through some guided activities, games and prompts to get natural looking images — like reading a story together, blowing bubbles or simply walking down a path. But most importantly please do not worry if things aren’t going perfectly – you may be surprised at what we are still able to capture even with meltdowns, tears, diaper changes, a need for a break – trust me, it will all be ok!
